DOT triggers small avalanche east of Stevens summit

The Washington State Department of Transportation sets off a controlled snowslide at Stevens Pass Thursday, April 9.

STEVENS PASS — Spring warmth is getting rid of some of our mountain snow, but the Department of Transportation is doing their part too.

The DOT carried out avalanche control Thursday along Stevens Pass, between milepost 58 and the summit. The two-hour project stopped traffic in both directions until about 4 p.m.

The agency said the warming weather has loosened the snowpack, so crews decided to take it down before it posed a hazard to mountain traffic along Highway 2.
