Death of 41-year-old man in Moses Lake described as a ‘terrible accident’

The death of a man who fell from his boat Thursday morning into Moses Lake is being described as “nothing more than a terrible accident,” by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The man has been identified as Kelly Ellingson, 41, of Moses Lake.

“Marine deputies learned that Ellingson and a companion had launched a small motorized boat from the (Blue Heron Park) dock, and then attempted to return to the dock to retrieve a forgotten item,” the sheriff’s office reported. “Ellingson was operating the boat and accelerated while making a turn, causing both him and his friend to fall into the water around 9:30 a.m. The companion swam to shore, but Ellingson went under and didn’t resurface.”

Neither Ellingson nor his companion were wearing a life vest.

Sheriff’s Marine Unit boats and citizens searched for several hours before Columbia River Dive rescue personnel recovered Ellingson’s body about 5 p.m. Thursday.
