Coroner says Seattle deputy fire chief died from injuries suffered in a fall

Seattle Deputy Fire Chief Jay Schreckengost died of injuries he suffered in a fall while hunting in rural Kittitas County, the coroner said today.

Kittitas County Coroner Nick Henderson completed an autopsy on Schreckengost today before making his determination.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office had said there were no signs of foul play in the death.

Schreckengost, 60, went missing Nov. 2 while elk hunting in the Cliffdale area. His truck was found shortly after and his body was found last Sunday about a half-mile from his truck after an extensive search by numerous agencies.

Henderson said Schreckengost  suffered multiple blunt force trauma, including a fractured neck and severed spinal cord.

Those injuries are consistent with a fall, Henderson said.
