Coin flip decides the next mayor for the town of George

After a double dose of good luck, Don Entzel has been elected as the new mayor of George.

Entzel won a coin flip Tuesday to settle a tie with incumbent Mayor Gerene Nelson.

First, however, there was a drawing to see which of the two would be heads, with Entzel’s name drawn.

Then, County Auditor Michele Jaderlund flipped a coin, which landed on heads.

The coin flip was necessary after a hand recount Tuesday showed the two still tied 28-28.

State election law requires tie elections be settled “by lot.” Which in this case, meant a coin flip.

The election-night vote count had Entzel ahead by one vote, but later counts threw the race into a tie.

There was one write-in vote, which was determined to be invalid.
