Child rapist convicted after acting as own lawyer

Jeremey Douglas Pedersen (Department of Corrections)

WENATCHEE — A Spokane man who represented himself at his child rape trial received a felony conviction Friday, on his 47th birthday.

Jeremey Douglas Pedersen spent last week on trial in Chelan County questioning witnesses, including the 13-year-old girl he victimized. Wenatchee police said Pederson twice sexually abused the child around 2011 or 2012, when she was seven years old.

Pedersen has a prior felony history including a 2015 conviction for first-degree theft in Spokane County. Wenatchee police interviewed him about the rape allegation in summer 2018, while he was jailed for a probation offense, and Chelan County prosecutors pressed charges that November.

After three days of testimony, the jury convicted Pederson Friday afternoon on a count of first-degree child rape, but acquitted him of a related charge of child molestation.

Judge Lesley Allan scheduled Pedersen for sentencing March 26 , when he could face at least nine years in prison.
