About 20 chickens were killed in a midnight fire last night in East Wenatchee that swept through several small chicken coops.

The fire in the vicinity of 2400 4th St. N.E. was difficult for firefighters to access in the middle of an orchard, Douglas County Fire District 2 said.

Several 4-by-4-foot coops were destroyed and less than two dozen chickens killed, the fire district said.

Firefighters, who remained on the scene until 3:40 this morning, were unable to contact the property owners.

The cause of the fire, which was initially reported as a barn fire, has not yet been determined.
