WENATCHEE — Chelan County Commissioner Bob Bugert announced today he won’t seek reelection when his term ends this year.

Bugert, 67, chaired the three-member board of commissioners in 2021. He says next year, he’ll instead volunteer his time to nonprofit organizations in the community.

The one-term commissioner previously led the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. He defeated restaurateur Shon Smith in 2017 to represent Chelan County District 2, which includes which includes west-central Wenatchee, the Upper Valley and Lake Wenatchee.

Bugert says he wanted to give early notice of his decision, so that other candidates can step forward and begin to plan their campaigns. Election filings open May 16; new elected officers of Chelan County will be sworn in in January 2023.

“Serving as a county commissioner affords people the opportunity to have a big impact on their community,” Bugert said in a press statement.
