Whitworth Assistant Named Cashmere Coach

CASHMERE, WA – Cashmere has selected a new head football coach to replace the retiring Phil Zukowski.  Athletic Director Jeff Carlson says they’re hiring a young college assistant from the Spokane area…

Bryan Bremer Hired to Replace Phil Zukowski

“Cashmere School District is excited to announce the hiring of Bryan Bremer as the next head football coach for the Cashmere Bulldogs. Bryan will teach P.E./weights classes at Cashmere High School. Bryan has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Whitworth University. He served as the head offensive line coach and head recruiting coordinator during that time. He also spent one year as a defensive graduate assistant coach in 2014,” said Carlson.

Bremer Hired as Both Football Coach and P-E Teacher

According to Carlson, Bremer was chosen out of quite a pool of applicants.  “We had a little over 20 candidates that applied for head football coach as well as our P-E position.  We narrowed the field down to four and offer the position to Bryan on Wednesday.  He really impressed the interview committee with his energy and enthusiasm and vision for the program.  He just seems like he’s going to be a great fit for our football program as we move forward.”

Zukowski, who is retiring after a 34-year career as a high school football coach.  Zukowski began his coaching career at Adna in 1984. He led the Pirates to a State B Championship just six years later. He moved on to coach Rochester in 1991 and led the Warriors to the state playoffs before interviewing for the job at Cashmere. When Zukowski was hired in 1995, he became just the third coach in Cashmere football history. He led the Bulldogs to the State 1A Title in 2008. Over his 34-years, he’s had 22 teams reach the playoffs.

Carlson Says Zukowski Helped in Selection Process

Carlson says Zukowski had quite a hand in helping to select his replacement.  “Coach Zukowski met with all four of our final candidates.  He spent a lot of time with them.  We allocated a half-hour for each candidate so they could sit down with Coach Z and give them the opportunity to ask Coach Z questions.  He (Zukowski) was also part of the tour, taking each of the candidates around and introduced them to some assistant coaches.  So yes, we definitely leaned on Coach Z for his expertise as well.  Everyone’s real comfortable with the hire that we made and excited to get Bryan (Bremer) here to continue the great tradition of Bulldog football that we have going here.”

Carlson says Zukowski is scheduled for surgery soon so Bremer will come in early to cover Zukowski’s boys P-E classes.  “This will also give him a chance to work with the kids in spring and summer drills and camps.”

Bremer Grew Up in Corvallis, Oregon

Bryan grew up in Corvallis, Oregon and attended Santiam Christian High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Whitworth University, and was a two-year starter on the offensive line for the Pirates. He also received a Master’s degree in Administrative Leadership from Whitworth in 2016.

Bryan’s wife (Makenzie) is a 6th grade teacher in the Mead School District.
