MAZAMA – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has segregated over 340,000 acres in the Methow Valley from rules that oversee mining on federal lands.  This means land surrounding Mazama is now temporarily withdrawn from mineral exploration and development for two years.  This move will prohibit new mining claims on this portion of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, but does not prevent ongoing mining operations on valid pre-existing mining claims. Many local residents have expressed concern about the potential impacts of a large-scale mining in the area.
