BJ’s robbery suspect now accused of earlier Royal City armed robbery

A video image from the Grant County Sheriff's Office shows a man they say is Jose Torres robbing a Moses Lake convenience store Nov.17.

The man arrested for robbing BJ’s Shell station in Rock Island in November is now accused in an earlier armed robbery at a grocery store in Royal City.

The Royal City Police Department says Jesus Torres, 25, a former Royal City resident, entered the grocery store Nov. 6, pointed a pistol at employees and demanded money. He had fled by the time police arrived.

Torres is accused of robbing two Moses Lake businesses just after midnight Nov. 17, then leading pursuing officers on a chase through Ephrata, shooting at Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputies as he drove.

Deputy Jeff Wentworth was struck by a bullet fragment but has since returned to duty.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says later that same day Torres showed up at BJ’s in Rock Island, where he is accused of threatening a clerk and a customer with a handgun before making off with cash and a jug of antifreeze
