Bells Down AppleSox, former ‘Sox Leads M’s

WENATCHEE, WA – Matt James’ 3-run home run in the 5th inning helped lead Bellingham past Wenatchee Wednesday 6-to-2 in West Coast League action…
Bellingham built an early 2-run lead on Nick Nastrini’s RBI sacrifice fly in the 2nd and Dusty Stroup’s RBI single in the 3rd. AppleSox starting pitcher Grady Miller then walked two men aboard with two outs in the 5th when James did the damage…

The Sox got a man aboard in the 9th but Bellingham closer Ben Leeper shut the door on the 6-2 win…

Again, Joel Norman with the call as Bellingham gets the win. They’ll play the rubber game of the three game series tonight at Paul Thomas, Sr. Field with Michael Spellacy starting for Wenatchee against the Bell’s Nick Nastrini at 7:05.

A Night for Grand Slams Across the West Coast League

Also in West Coast League play last night as we look at the Les Schwab Scoreboard…
Davis Todosichuck’s grand slam home run highlighted a 6-run 4th inning for Kelowna in the Falcon’s 8-5 win over Cowlitz. Todosichuck drove in 6-runs on the night.

Hunter Vansau hit the first pitch thrown to him in the game over the fence for a 2-run home run that helped lead Victoria to a 6-3 win over Bend.

Chris Arpan hit a pinch-hit, grand slam home run in Yakima Valley’s 13-6 win over Corvallis.
Jack Filby scored on an errant pickoff move by Portland Pitcher Colby Wyatt in the top of the 9th inning that proved to be the game-winner for Walla Walla in a 2-1 decision.

Rykker Tom’s 2-run single was sandwiched between two, bases-loaded walks in a 4-run 6th inning that allowed Port Angeles to top Highline 4-2 in a non-league game at Civic Field.

Coming up tonight around the West Coast League…
Bend at Victoria; Yakima Valley hosting Corvallis; Walla Walla at Portland; and Bellingham at Wenatchee. Port Angeles also wraps up its non-league series with Highline.

Former AppleSox Marco Gonzalez Stellar in Mariners Win

Marco Gonzalez earned his team-leading 10th victory of the season as he and two relievers pitched a 2-hit shutout of the Angels Wednesday in Seattle’s 3-0 victory…
Gonzalez was stellar, retiring the first 10-batters he faced and pitching 7-innings on just 82-pitches. He struck out four and allowed just two hits. Alex Colome held the lead in the 8th and Edwin Diaz worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 36th save.

Offensively, Seattle got a surprise solo home run from fill-in catcher David Freitas in the 3rd, his first as a Major Leaguer. Nelson Cruz delivered a 2-run single in the 4th to cap the scoring.

Manager Scott Servais was glowing in the post-game press conference about the performance of his starting pitcher…

Seattle will go for the series win tonight with James Paxton on the mound against the Angel’s Tyler Skaggs at 7:07.

Turning to the Les Schwab Scoreboard in the American League West last night…
Make it 9 wins in a row for Boston as Chris Sale struck out 12 in the Red Sox 4-2 win over Texas.

Chad Pinders hit a 3-run home run as Oakland built an early 6-run lead and went on for an 8-3 win over Houston.

So Houston’s loss, combined with Seattle’s win, means the Astro’s lead in the A-L West is 3-games over the Mariners and 9-games in front of Oakland.
