Avalanche conditions lead to closure of Snoqualmie, Stevens passes

Avalanche conditions are historically bad in the Cascades and led to multiple closures of passes in the past weeks that continued into this morning.

Both Snoqualmie and Stevens passes currently closed with the Washington State Department of Transportation saying conditions will be reevaluated at 9:30 this morning.

Update: Snoqualmie Pass is expected to open at noon.

The deep snowpack in the mountains has been pummeled by rain all weekend, compounding already dangerous avalanche concerns.

In addition to Snoqualmie and Stevens, White Pass also has been closed much of the morning but is expected to reopen at 10 a.m.

Traffic on Snoqualmie is being stopped eastbound near North Bend and westbound near Ellensburg.
