The North Cascades Highway will be closed for the season Wednesday, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced today.
The state had planned to keep the scenic Highway 20 pass open until Nov. 15 but said with “warmer/wet conditions on the way, the risk of an avalanche is too great.
The pass will now officially close at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
It has been an on-and-off season for the pass, with a lengthy July closure during firefighting efforts on the Cedar Creek and Delancy fires.
Then last month, a mudslide closed Highway 20 for more than a day.
