As court upholds charter school law, Wenatchee announces first school board for Columbia Prep

On the same day the state Supreme Court upheld most of the state’s charter school  law, Wenatchee’s planned school, Columbia Prep, announced its founding board of directors.

Columbia Prep, a middle and high school, is expected to open in 2021.

The board includes educators with varied backgrounds. Rick Wray will be board chair. Also on the board are Sara Rolfs, Karen Rutherford, Karla Soto Mullins and Matt Lyons.

One of its first actions will be a public forum Thursday, Nov. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Veterans Hall in Wenatchee.

Teacher unions and civil rights groups had challenged Washington’s  charter school law, which was passed in 2016, claiming use of public money to fund such schools violated the state Constitution.

But the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, rejected that argument. Under the law, funding for charter schools will come from lottery proceeds instead of the general fund.
