LEAVENWORTH- If you’re up for a different type of event, Apple City Roller Derby is hosting the 4th Annual Bavarian Bruisefest this weekend in Leavenworth.
With 12 teams hitting the track, the tournament is the biggest it’s ever been according to local Apple City Roller Derby (ACRD) Coach Madeline Praye, also known as Your Kidd Sista.
“We’ve had teams come from all over Washington and down into Oregon, Idaho and this is our second year having teams from Canada,” Praye said. “It has expanded from a six-team tournament over one day all the way up to a 12-team tournament over a weekend.”
The weekend is jam-packed with roller derby action on Saturday and Sunday, with the first whistle at 10 a.m.
“This weekend is going to be solid roller derby,” Praye said. “We have 30-minute games, and it’s a double-elimination tournament so there’s going to be a lot of skating.”
With a number of experienced teams on their way, Praye says spectators can expect a lot of high-level skating on the track.
“We’re looking forward to seeing some high-level derby, a lot of contact,” Praye said. “It’s a very physical sport for women and it’s going to be a blast.”
ACRD will face off against Spokane’s Lilac City at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, followed by bouts from teams around the region through Sunday night.
