18-year-old Everett man accused of starting fire near Manson by blowing up mailbox

A 18-year-old Everett man has been accused of causing a fire above Grade Creek Road over the weekend north of Manson.

Arrested shortly after the fire broke out was Michael P. Popov.

He allegedly set fireworks off inside a mailbox, causing an explosion that ignited the brush fire, said Jason Reinfeld of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire first was reported about 1:30 Saturday afternoon and burned about 14-and-a-half acres before being contained early in the evening.

Crews from multiple agencies assisted in getting the fire under control.

In addition to the ground crews, a helicopter from the state Department of Natural Resources dumped water from above.

Meanwhile, the suspect’s vehicle was identified by a witness and eventually located by deputies.

Chief Arnold Baker of the Manson Volunteer Fire Department said crews had finished mopping up the area by 8:30 that evening.

Popov faces a charge of arson for knowingly causing the explosion that started the fire and  malicious mischief for the destruction of the mailbox, Reinfeld said.
