Truck-camper fire kills occupant in Wenatchee

WENATCHEE — A fire that broke out in a parked truck and camper Sunday night in Wenatchee left one person and his dog dead.

Chief Andy Davidson, deputy chief of operations with Chelan County Fire District 1, says his crews responded just before midnight to South Miller Street and Red Apple Road near Central Washington Hospital, where the camper portion of the parked vehicle was engulfed.

“It’s likely the fire started inside that living space,” Davidson said. “They put the fire out fairly quickly. As they were overhauling the fire, they discovered there was an adult male and a dog inside who were deceased.”

Davidson said the damage from the fire was extensive, and the cause hasn’t been pinned down. “There was so much destruction in the living space, it’d be very, very difficult to determine what caused it.”

The deceased man appeared to be living in the camper and moving the vehicle around the neighborhood, he said.

Coroner Wayne Harris said Tuesday the victim has not yet been identified. An autopsy is pending.

Davidson said the vehicle appeared to be a three-quarter ton pickup with a slide-in camper.
