CASHMERE, WA – Cashmere Football Coach Phil Zukowski is winding down a 34-year career this season and agreed to allow NCWLIFE Channel mic him up for last Friday’s game versus Chelan. His club throttled the Goats in the annual “Battle for the Bronze Shoe” game by a score of 49-0. It was also homecoming for Cashmere, senior night, and “Coach Z’s” last official home game during the regular season.
Phil Zukowski began his coaching career at Adna in 1984. He led the Pirates to a State B Championship just six years later. He moved on to coach Rochester in 1991 and led the Warriors to the state playoffs before interviewing for the job at Cashmere. When Zukowski was hired in 1995, he became just the third coach in Cashmere football history. He led the Bulldogs to the State 1A Title in 2008. Over his 34-years, he’s had 22 teams reach the playoffs.
In preparing for Friday, Zukowski said he tried to make it just like any other game. Afterwards, he admitted that the emotions of the moment caught up to him and surprised him. “I got choked up,” he said. “Knowing this was the last regular season home game, saying goodbye to the seniors, and then going over to kiss my wife, I was surprised how emotional I was…I teared up!” said Zukowski.
We hope you enjoy this exclusive sound of a legendary coach leading his players and staff into another Friday night under the lights through the lens and microphone of the NCWLIFE Channel.
