(Wenatchee, WA)…Eastmont ended Wenatchee’s 16-game winning streak Tuesday night with a 3-2 win at the Apple Bowl. Omar Mendoza’s goal in the 78th minute broke a 2-2 tie and gave Eastmont a little revenge after it was the Panthers who knocked the Wildcats out of the playoffs a year ago.
The game began with Wenatchee taking the momentum as Luis Navarette scored on a header off a somersault throw-in by Matt Springer in the 4th minute to give the Panthers an early 1-nothing lead. Then things seemed to go further in Wenatchee’s favor when Eastmont goaltender Jose Garcia went down with an apparent leg injury. But replacement Vladomir Ryzhkova was up for the challenge.
Eastmont tied the game at 1 in the 25th minute on a free kick by Johan Espinoza from 25-yards out. The teams would head into the locker room tied at 1. It wasn’t until the 60th minute of the game that Wenatchee would break the tie on a free kick goal by Jose Camarillo.
In the 66th minute, Eastmont’s corner kick scooted under a couple players before Jack VanAssche chipped it with his left foot toward the goal. It appeared at first that Wenatchee’s Luis Acosta was able to do a bicycle kick to deflect the shot out of the goal, but the assistant referee signaled a goal for the Wildcats. That made it 2-2 as time was winding down.
Finally, in the 78th minute, Eastmont’s Emmanuel Lopez fired a shot from the 29-yard line, which deflected off Wenatchee’s Acosta right in front of Mendoza, who quickly struck with his left foot from the 11-yard line and scored the game-winner.
Eastmont improved to 6-1 with the win and took over sole possession of first place in the Big-9 while Wenatchee fell to 6-1. The two teams will meet again April 21st at Eastmont High School.
