CHELAN FALLS- A popular site on the Columbia River off Highway 97 is closed for the winter season because of abuse from area-motorists.
Beebe Springs Natural area will close Jan. 11 until March 15 after motorists passing by on the busy highway are leaving more than the state Department of Fish and Wildlife bargained for.
During the winter months the vault toilet is locked because of limited maintenance abilities during freezing temperatures, while the park remains open. Regional Lands Operation Manager Rich Finger said some highway travelers are using the grounds as a rest stop, creating their own solutions when they find the toilets are unavailable.
Finger said between the sanitation issues, trash and general public health and safety issues the agency is forced to close the wildlife area until Spring.
Fish and Wildlife says they are looking for a long-term, financially sustainable solution for Beebe Springs, but until then the seasonal closure will remain.
